Australian-producer, What So Not recently announced his long awaited debut album Not All The Beautiful Things, out March 9th via Counter Records.
Over three years in the making, Not All the Beautiful Things is about transformation and metamorphosis, a culmination of everything the Australian-born artist has been working towards as he’s established a profile as one of the most respected names in dance music. The album features collaborations with Skrillex, rock-legends Toto, San Holo, KLP, SLUMBERJACK and more.
In anticipation of the album, What So Not released a new single from the album titled “Stuck In Orbit,” featuring Sydney-based vocalist BOUY.
According to What So Not, the song started off as a jam with Jono Ma (Jagwar Ma) in his film scoring studio. The vocals began as a sketch of adlibs from BUOY with only two words, drawn out across the verse “I ov-er comp-en-sate”. That set the tone for the entire piece; each word delivered with thought and consideration. He then wrote the next phase of the lyrics during an overnight flight delay, while was sitting in a hotel room. “Stuck in transit,” his pen put to paper.
The song features anthemic synthesizers, pulsating percussion, atmospheric vocals and subtleties of a lush sonic soundscape. It’s easily one of What So Not’s most creative and artistic releases to date. And is set to be the fourth song on the upcoming album’s tracklist.
Balancing prolific touring and studio time, 2017 saw What So Not close Coachella’s Gobi tent and headline Australia’s Listen Out festival and sold out shows across Europe, the USA and UK. Over New Years, I had the pleasure of catching his live set at the Decadence Music Festival in Arizona. He played to a highly-energetic crowd packed inside an airplane hanger-sized facility in Chandler, Arizona. The Decadence Music Festival is world renowned for their New Year’s parties and this year was no exception. The event, which featured What So Not, included an impressive line-up of artists including Duke Dumont, ZHU, Justice, Zedd, Galantis, Boys Noize, Madeon, Big Wild and many more.
