Guided by charismatic vocals, bright piano, and retro-sounding guitar work the song is a melodic and catchy nod to the struggles of life and love.
Lyrically, “Number 1” is not as happy as the melody may suggest. The song is about falling short and landing in second place. As the chorus echos, “baby you’re fun, but you’ll never be number one.”
